A 71-year-old man is in critical condition following a shooting in Pleasanton on Saturday afternoon. According to local authorities, a suspect is now in custody in connection with the incident, which they are calling an isolated event stemming from a dispute at a residence.
Officers from the Pleasanton Police Department responded to reports of a shooting around 3:00 p.m. in the 3600 block of Vineyard Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency personnel treated the victim on the scene before he was transported to a nearby trauma center with life-threatening injuries.
The victim, identified only as a Pleasanton resident, remains in critical condition as of Sunday. No further information about his identity has been released at this time.
Authorities have identified the suspect as 50-year-old Joshua Kaplan, who was taken into custody shortly after the incident. Police have not yet disclosed the nature of the relationship between Kaplan and the victim or what exactly led to the violent altercation.
“At this point in the investigation, we believe this was an isolated incident,” a Pleasanton Police Department spokesperson said in a statement. “There is no ongoing threat to the public.”
Residents in the area reported hearing gunshots and witnessing a swift police response that included multiple patrol units and investigators on the scene. Some neighbors were temporarily asked to remain inside their homes as police secured the area.
