A tragic accident at a popular Maine campground has claimed the lives of two Massachusetts women following a devastating camper explosion over the weekend.

Authorities have identified the victims as Alesia Ventura-Large, 58, of Marlborough, and Nancy Pilsch, 58, of Leominster. Both women were critically injured in the explosion and later died from their injuries at Maine Medical Center in Portland on Sunday, July 27.

The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Powder Horn Campground located on Cascade Road. Emergency crews from Old Orchard Beach Fire Department responded quickly and found the two women suffering from severe burn injuries. Despite immediate medical attention and transport to the hospital, both women succumbed to their injuries the following day.

According to preliminary findings from the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office, a leak of liquid propane gas into and beneath the camper appears to have been the source of the explosion. Investigators believe the ignition occurred when one of the occupants lit a candle, unknowingly triggering the deadly blast.

The resulting fire was quickly extinguished by first responders, and the scene was secured for further investigation. Fire investigators are continuing their analysis, with assistance from the Maine Solid Fuel Inspectors, to examine the camper’s gas systems and identify the exact source of the leak.

As the investigation continues, the incident has left both Massachusetts communities and campers at Powder Horn in shock. Loved ones are mourning the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Alesia Ventura-Large and Nancy Pilsch, two women remembered for their warmth, friendship, and shared love of travel.
