The McGill-Toolen Catholic High School community in Mobile, Alabama, is grieving the heartbreaking loss of rising senior Will Glass, whose life was tragically cut short over the weekend.
School officials confirmed the news in an email to parents Monday. Will’s body was recovered from Smith Lake in north Alabama on Sunday night, according to the Winston County Coroner. He was just beginning what was expected to be a promising senior year, both in the classroom and on the baseball field.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of one of our beloved students,” wrote Principal Blake Stein. “Will was a bright, kind-hearted young man who brought joy, laughter, and a deep sense of friendship to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”
Will was a relief pitcher on McGill-Toolen’s varsity baseball team and one of twelve seniors returning this season. Head coach Tim Becker, a 33-year coaching veteran, expressed the deep emotional toll this tragedy has taken on the team and school.
“I’ve never had this happen before,” Becker said. “Will was not only a great teammate, he was just a great kid. He worked hard, supported everyone, and had really hit the weight room hard. We were looking forward to him having a great year.”
The school has announced a rosary and prayer service to honor Will’s life on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. As the community comes together in faith and sorrow, grief counselors and campus ministers are available to support students and staff in the days ahead.
“Our school community is heartbroken,” said Principal Stein. “In times like these, we turn to our faith for strength and unity. Will’s memory will forever be a cherished part of McGill-Toolen. He made an impact on our school that will not be forgotten.”
As the Glass family navigates this unimaginable loss, the school has asked for privacy and continued prayers. The entire McGill-Toolen family mourns with them — remembering Will as a young man of character, warmth, and promise.
