The McHenry Police Department has filed charges against 18-year-old Jason K. Land, of Fox River Grove, following a tragic three-vehicle crash that claimed the lives of two teenagers and injured another early Monday morning, July 28, 2025.
At approximately 12:30 a.m., officers and personnel from the McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded to the intersection of Richmond Road (IL Route 31) and McCullom Lake Road after receiving reports of a major crash.
According to the initial investigation, Land was driving a red 2006 Audi A4 southbound on Richmond Road at a high rate of speed when he ran a red light and struck a black 2015 Nissan Sentra that was turning left onto McCullom Lake Road. The collision pushed the Nissan into a parked, unoccupied 2003 Toyota Echo.
Land, who was the only occupant of the Audi, was transported to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Upon his release from the hospital, he was taken into custody and transported to the McHenry Police Department.
Tragically, the two passengers in the Nissan—a 19-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy—were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names have not yet been released, pending family notification.
The intersection was closed for nearly seven hours while the McHenry County Regional Crash Assistance Team—comprising officers from various local agencies—conducted a comprehensive on-site investigation.
He was booked into the McHenry County Jail, where he is being held pending upcoming court proceedings.
The McHenry Police Department urges anyone with information related to the crash to contact their Criminal Investigation Division at 815-363-2599, or leave an anonymous tip via the tip line at 815-363-2124 (no caller ID is used).
This tragic event serves as a sobering reminder of the devastating consequences of impaired and reckless driving.
