The Gundersen Health System and the greater La Crosse community are mourning the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Josh Sendelbach, a beloved paramedic, friend, and vital part of the emergency medical services family. Josh passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind an entire community shaken and grieving the loss of someone who dedicated his life to saving others.
A native of Whitehall, Wisconsin, Josh carried with him the deep-rooted values of compassion, resilience, and humility. He graduated from Whitehall Memorial High School, furthered his studies at Western Technical College, and continued his academic and professional journey at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. His path led him to a distinguished career as a paramedic with Gundersen Health System, where he became known not only for his skill and professionalism but for his immense heart and unwavering dedication to his team and the patients he served.
Josh lived in La Crosse, Wisconsin, but his impact stretched far beyond geographic boundaries. Those who worked with him describe him as more than a coworker—he was a beacon of strength, a source of humor during the long, exhausting nights of third shift, and a trusted friend when things felt too heavy. From the chaos of paramedic school to the tense moments in the ER, Josh brought levity and steadiness that made even the most difficult days a little easier.
He was the kind of person who remembered the little things. His humor was quick, his kindness effortless, and his loyalty unwavering. Whether on a call, training with his team, or simply sharing a coffee and story with a colleague, Josh brought an energy that was both calming and inspiring. He was someone who instinctively knew how to comfort in crisis and how to lift spirits in silence.
To those who knew him best, Josh was more than a paramedic. He was a brother, a confidant, a loyal friend. His laughter could cut through fatigue. His presence made even the longest shifts bearable. He led with empathy, served with passion, and lived with a sense of joy that was contagious.
A colleague and close friend shared:
“From our wild, exhausting, laughter-filled days in paramedic school to the endless stories and unforgettable moments in the ER during third shift—you always knew how to bring humor and comfort, even in the toughest times. Your kindness, wit, and unwavering spirit made every challenge more manageable and every day brighter. I am forever grateful for your friendship, your support, and the countless memories that will stay with me always. Though you may be gone, your laughter and the lessons you shared will continue to live on in all of our hearts. Fly high Josh, we got it from here.”
Josh’s sudden passing has left a void that cannot be filled, but the legacy he leaves behind is powerful and lasting. His commitment to service, his care for others, and the joy he brought into the world will be remembered by all who knew him.
As Gundersen Health System honors his memory, plans for a celebration of life and memorial service will be shared in the coming days. In the meantime, the EMS and healthcare communities, along with his loved ones, grieve deeply and hold tightly to the memories, lessons, and love he gave so freely.
