Dan Wilson, a Montgomery County Legislator and respected public servant, has been identified by his family as the victim of a tragic plane crash that occurred Wednesday at Block Island State Airport. The crash claimed Wilson’s life and left two others hospitalized.

The aircraft, a private plane owned by the Condair Flyers Flying Club and based at Albany International Airport, departed Albany at 10:50 a.m. en route to Block Island. According to flight data, the plane made three landing attempts. After circling the airport twice, the aircraft made a final descent that ended in disaster. Witnesses reported the plane appeared to be traveling at over 100 miles per hour as it came in for landing and ultimately crashed short of the runway.

Block Island Police Chief Paul Deane confirmed that the plane may have touched down too far along the runway during its final approach, which likely contributed to the crash. Emergency crews had to cut open the side of the aircraft to free the trapped passengers.

All three individuals on board were in their 70s and residents of New York. They were transported to the Block Island Medical Center for treatment. While the names of the survivors have not been officially released, CBS 6 reported that one woman publicly identified her mother as one of the survivors on social media.

Wilson’s family confirmed his death to CBS 6 on Thursday morning. Known for his commitment to the people of Montgomery County, Wilson was a familiar and trusted figure in local government. His unexpected passing has left the community in shock and mourning.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Officials are examining flight conditions, mechanical factors, and pilot decisions, with particular focus on the aircraft’s speed and runway approach during its final descent.

This incident marks a heartbreaking loss for Wilson’s family, constituents, and colleagues alike. As investigators continue their work, the community reflects on the life and legacy of a man devoted to public service.

Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses and more information becomes available about the survivors and the circumstances surrounding the crash.
