A tragic single-vehicle crash on Thursday evening has claimed the life of 63-year-old Robert Stempel, a Salley resident, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.
The crash occurred around 4:16 p.m. on South Dixie Road, near Jordan Creek Road. Authorities say Stempel was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche northbound when the vehicle veered off the left side of the roadway, struck a fence, and overturned.
Emergency crews responded swiftly and found Stempel critically injured at the scene. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was airlifted to Prisma Health in Columbia, where he later succumbed to his injuries despite medical efforts.
The Aiken County Coroner’s Office responded to the hospital and is conducting a toxicology screening to determine whether alcohol or drugs may have played a role in the crash. The results of those tests are pending and will contribute to the ongoing investigation.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Aiken County Coroner’s Office are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash. So far, there is no indication that speed, distraction, or weather were contributing factors, but all aspects—including vehicle condition and road conditions—are being examined.
Stempel was the only occupant in the vehicle, and no other vehicles were involved. There were no additional injuries reported.
