The Rochester Community is mourning the heartbreaking and unexpected loss of Mason Straeter, a 7th-grade student at Rochester Middle School, whose passing has left a deep void in the hearts of classmates, teachers, and all who knew him.
Mason’s vibrant personality, generous spirit, and kind heart made him a beloved figure in the school community and beyond. Known for his infectious energy, bright smile, and genuine compassion, Mason was not just a student — he was a friend, a source of encouragement, and a light to those around him.
Teachers describe him as a young man who always greeted others with a warm “hello” and who consistently went out of his way to help classmates feel welcome and included. Whether in the classroom, at lunch, or during school events, Mason brought joy and positivity wherever he went.
“Mason’s presence brought energy, courage, and kindness that touched the lives of many,” a school staff member shared. “He made people feel seen, appreciated, and safe to be themselves. That’s a rare and beautiful gift in someone so young.”
In response to this tragic loss, Rochester Community Schools will open the doors of Rochester Middle School this evening at 6:00 p.m. to provide grief counseling and support to students and families who may need it.
Licensed professionals from Four County (4C) will be available to speak with students individually or in groups, helping them navigate the complex emotions that come with such a profound loss.
The school district also issued a heartfelt statement, saying, “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the Straeter family, Mason’s friends, and his classmates. We are heartbroken alongside them, and we will continue to support one another in the days ahead.”
Counselors and administrators are urging parents to talk openly with their children about their feelings, encourage them to ask questions, and remind them that grief looks different for everyone.
Additional resources will be made available in the coming days to ensure ongoing support for both students and staff. In tribute to Mason, students have already begun creating a memorial at the school, placing flowers, drawings, letters, and photographs in honor of his memory.
Some students shared memories of how Mason helped them through tough times, offered a listening ear, or simply made them laugh when they needed it most. He was truly a friend to many and a beacon of kindness within the halls of Rochester Middle School.
