02 NEWs has obtained and released exclusive photos of Michael Paul Brown, the man identified as the suspect in Friday morning’s deadly shooting at The Owl Bar in Anaconda, Montana.

The mass shooting unfolded at approximately 10:30 a.m., leaving four people dead, including a bartender and three patrons, according to local law enforcement. Authorities have named Michael Paul Brown, 45, of Anaconda, as the sole suspect in the fatal incident.

Brown remains at large and is considered armed and extremely dangerous. A widespread manhunt is underway, with a strong law enforcement presence in and around Anaconda, particularly the Stumptown area. The Granite County Sheriff’s Office confirmed at 9:40 p.m. Friday that the search continues.

“There is a perimeter set in the Stumptown area,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a public advisory. “Granite County Deputies will be patrolling the Georgetown Lake area and nearby towns. Stay vigilant — lock your doors and vehicles.”

Military Background and Mental Health Concerns

According to military records, Brown served in the U.S. Army as an armor crewman from 2001 to 2005 and was deployed to Iraq between early 2004 and March 2005. He later joined the Montana National Guard, serving from 2006 until his separation in 2009 at the rank of sergeant, confirmed Lt. Col. Ruth Castro, an Army spokesperson.

In interviews with 02 NEWs friends and family members described Brown as someone who had long struggled with untreated mental health issues, including PTSD. One longtime friend referred to him as a “gentle soul” who had become increasingly unstable in recent years, often sharing delusional stories about still serving in special forces.

Several community members reportedly raised concerns about Brown’s behavior prior to the shooting, but no official intervention occurred.

“He needed help,” the friend said. “It’s devastating that no one listened until it was too late.”

Authorities urge the public not to approach Brown under any circumstances. Anyone with information on his whereabouts should contact law enforcement immediately.
