The Memphis Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its own after Police Officer Demetrice Johnson, 32, was killed in a vehicle crash early Friday morning, August 2, 2024.

The fatal incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. at the intersection of Mississippi Boulevard and Danny Thomas Boulevard. Officer Johnson was in a patrol vehicle when it was struck by another car fleeing the scene of a nearby shooting. The fleeing vehicle, operated by a driver who had been shot moments earlier, collided with the patrol unit. Both Officer Johnson and the fleeing driver were pronounced dead at the scene. Officer Johnson’s partner, who was also in the vehicle, sustained critical injuries and remains hospitalized.

Officer Johnson had been a dedicated member of the Memphis Police Department for just over a year. He had recently graduated from the police academy three months ago and was assigned to the North Main Station. His commitment to public safety and his promising career were tragically cut short in the line of duty.

He is survived by his wife and young son, who are now left to carry on his memory and legacy.

The Memphis Police Department and the wider community have expressed their sorrow and gratitude for Officer Johnson’s service. His sacrifice will not be forgotten.
