It is with immense sorrow and heartbreak that we announce the tragic passing of Jonty Ryan, a cherished member of the Fordell School and Feilding communities, who died in a tragic all-terrain vehicle (ATV) accident.
Jonty, the beloved son of Amy and Aaron Ryan and treasured big brother to Evie, was a young boy whose quiet strength, kindness, and love for life left a deep and lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Jonty’s death has sent ripples of grief across his school, his hometown of Feilding, New Zealand, and the wider community. Though only young, Jonty carried himself with the maturity, generosity, and integrity of someone far beyond his years.
He had a presence that could brighten a room, not by demanding attention, but through the simple and genuine way he connected with others. He was always there to help—often quietly, never asking for recognition, but always making a difference.
At Fordell School, Jonty was known for his compassion, leadership, and dedication. He was a proud and passionate member of Tawa House, giving his all in everything he did—whether it was running cross country, playing rugby, helping out younger students, or rolling around in the mud with a huge grin on his face.
He loved the outdoors, and nothing made him happier than being in his element, working hard, and enjoying the land. Jonty’s connection with his little sister, Evie, was something truly special. As her protector, her playmate, and her role model, he demonstrated the very best of brotherly love.
He extended that same kindness to other younger students at Fordell, making them feel included, supported, and safe. His actions often spoke louder than words—he didn’t need to say much to be a true leader.
As he transitioned to Feilding High School, Jonty began to flourish even more. He had found his stride, embracing farming life with enthusiasm and confidence.
The Fordell School team remained proud of him from afar, watching a boy they had nurtured grow into a young man full of purpose and pride. His farming interests, work ethic, and humble attitude were evident in everything he did.
In the words of his school community:
“Jonty was the type of person who made things better just by being there. Our wee school has been richer for having him as a student, and in his later years, as the son of Amy and Aaron Ryan and beautiful big brother to Evie.”
This sudden and unimaginable loss leaves a space that can never be filled. The entire community now wraps its arms around the Ryan family, sending love, strength, and heartfelt condolences during this incredibly difficult time.
Jonty’s memory will forever be etched into the heart of the school and the land he so dearly loved. Rest in peace, dear Jonty. You were a shining light, and though your time was far too short, your legacy of kindness, courage, and quiet leadership will live on in every life you touched.
