The gunman responsible for Monday evening’s horrific mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan has been identified by law enforcement sources as Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old man from Las Vegas.
Tamura stormed into 345 Park Avenue, a luxury 44-story office building in the heart of Manhattan, and opened fire, killing at least five people, including an off-duty NYPD officer. The officer, who was working a private security detail at the building, was among the first victims gunned down.
Authorities say four civilians also lost their lives in the senseless rampage, and the number of injured victims is expected to rise as the investigation continues.
The towering skyscraper at 345 Park Avenue, home to major offices like Blackstone and NFL headquarters, became the scene of chaos and terror in a matter of minutes as Tamura, described by sources as “deranged,” carried out the attack during the busy evening hours. The building sits in a heavily trafficked area near Grand Central Terminal, Rockefeller Center, and Central Park.
Tamura was later found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after reportedly barricading himself on the 33rd floor of the building.
Law enforcement officials continue to investigate Tamura’s background and motive. Sources confirmed he held a concealed carry license for a handgun and had previously been licensed as a private investigator, although that license had expired. Surveillance footage showed Tamura arriving at the scene alone before initiating the attack.
City officials and the NYPD have expressed outrage and grief over the devastating loss, especially the death of one of their own. Monday’s shooting marks one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent NYC history and has reignited urgent conversations around gun access and building security.
The area around East 52nd Street between Park and Lexington Avenues remains cordoned off as the investigation continues. Updates are expected as authorities release further details and identify the victims.
