The El Capitan High School community is reeling from the devastating news of the passing of 17-year-old Obed Lopez, a cherished student and athlete who tragically died on August 2, 2025.
Since his sophomore year, Obed stood out both on and off the court—not only for his athletic talent but for the kindness, discipline, and positive energy he brought into every room he entered. As his head coach shared, Obed’s presence at every practice and game was marked by a contagious spirit and a deep commitment to his team, his school, and those around him.
“Obed impacted so many lives with his love, laughter, and unforgettable memories,” said the coach. “We are all so heartbroken.”
Obed’s sudden passing has left his family, friends, teammates, and teachers in deep sorrow. His bright future and compassionate nature made him a role model among his peers.
In light of this unthinkable tragedy, and with full support from the Lopez family, a GoFundMe has been launched to help ease the financial burden of funeral and memorial expenses. The campaign aims to rally the support of the community that Obed so deeply touched.
