Authorities have identified the victim in a fatal shooting that occurred Thursday morning in the west end of St. John’s. Terry Griffin, 30, was found deceased inside a residence on Salter Place following reports of gunfire shortly after 10:40 a.m., according to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC).

Police say Griffin’s death is being investigated as a targeted shooting, indicating the suspect may have specifically sought him out. Upon arriving at the scene, officers located Griffin inside the home with fatal injuries. A shelter-in-place advisory was promptly issued for the surrounding area as authorities launched an extensive containment and search operation.

The investigation soon shifted to a second location on Gros Morne Place, where officers apprehended a 48-year-old male suspect. That individual was already facing charges in a prior case involving uttering threats and assault with a weapon — a case in which Griffin was one of the identified victims. Investigators are now examining whether a link exists between the earlier charges and Thursday’s deadly encounter.

At present, no formal charges have been laid in relation to Griffin’s death. The homicide investigation remains active and ongoing, with law enforcement working to collect evidence, analyze timelines, and determine a motive.

In a public appeal, Constable James Cadigan urged residents in the area to check any security footage they may have from Columbus Drive, including Salter Place and Gros Morne Place, between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on Thursday. Police are especially interested in doorbell camera footage, dashcam video, or any other surveillance that might help trace the suspect’s movements or actions before and after the shooting.

“We are asking for the community’s support,” Cadigan said. “Even the smallest detail could help shed light on what occurred and bring clarity to a very serious situation.”

As St. John’s residents come to terms with the loss of a young man and await answers, the RNC assures the public that they are diligently pursuing every lead. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the RNC directly or submit tips anonymously via Crime Stoppers.

This incident adds to a troubling series of violent events in the region, and police have reaffirmed their commitment to public safety and justice for the victim’s family and loved ones.
