The tight-knit Conifer community is mourning the devastating loss of Michael and Debbie Carman, the beloved couple behind the well-known Abide Ride Burrito Truck, who were tragically killed in a wrong-way crash earlier this week.
The crash occurred shortly before 6 a.m. on Monday on Highway 285 near Highway 8 in Jefferson County. According to Colorado State Patrol Trooper Gabriel Moltrer, a 33-year-old man driving an Acura RL was heading southbound in the northbound lanes of Highway 285 when he collided with a Cadillac CTS. The force of the crash caused the Cadillac to spin out and collide with a Chevrolet Colorado.
The driver and passenger of the Cadillac — later identified by loved ones as Michael (59) and Debbie Carman (64) — were killed in the collision. The driver of the Acura was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, while the Chevrolet’s driver was treated for precautionary minor injuries.
While the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has yet to formally release the names, community members have confirmed the identities and gathered in tribute. Their food truck, a staple on Conifer Road, now serves as a growing memorial adorned with flowers, notes, and candles, symbolizing the deep affection and admiration they inspired.
Known for their warmth, faith-driven mission, and incredible burritos, Michael and Debbie weren’t just small business owners — they were pillars of the community. Locals describe them as generous souls who “fed more than just hunger — they fed hearts.”
As authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, the Conifer community is left grappling with the painful loss of two people who made an outsized impact with their love, their food, and their faith.
Plans for a public vigil or memorial have not yet been announced.
